TERMESANA RESERVA
Herederos de Juana Perdomo

Termesana Reserva is a bespoke bottle design developed for the Vinos de Lanzarote Designation of Origin, a wine-making region unlike any other in the world. Dark green glass seated in a base of native basaltic rock, the bottle makes the island's volcanic geology tangible and present. Lanzarote's extraordinary landscape, where vines grow in ash-covered craters shaped by eruptions, is not backdrop but authorship. The design makes that visible.

Canary Islands wine was highly prized in Britain as far back as the 1400s, with Lanzarote's wines notable enough to earn mention in Shakespeare. In 1730, a series of volcanic eruptions buried the island's vineyards under deep layers of ash and lapilli. Rather than abandon the land, winemakers developed a method of dry cultivation unique to Lanzarote: enarenado, in which each vine is planted in a hand-dug hollow and sheltered by a crescent of volcanic rock, drawing moisture from the ash itself.

Each vine sits in its own hand-dug hollow, sheltered by a low crescent of dark volcanic rock that mirrors the form of the craters that shaped the island. The enclosure protects against the fierce Atlantic winds while the ash below draws in moisture from the air. Every vine is tended and harvested entirely by hand. It is an agriculture of extraordinary patience, and it is this that the bottle is designed to honour.

Because the islands escaped the phylloxera plague that devastated European viticulture in the 19th century, Lanzarote's vines were never grafted onto resistant rootstock. They grow today on their own original roots, making them among the oldest ungrafted vines in Europe and a living connection to a viticultural tradition that elsewhere no longer exists.
