HELVIA, AMONTILLADO
Bodegas Cayetano Rubio, Córdoba
Helvia is an Amontillado from Bodegas Cayetano Rubio, produced within the Montilla-Moriles DO from exclusively Pedro Ximénez grapes. The brand takes its name from Helvia, mother of the Stoic philosopher Seneca and, like him, a native of Cordoba. In honouring her, the brand connects to a city whose intellectual and cultural legacy extends far beyond its borders.

Engraved on the glass is a line from Seneca himself: "No man loses anything by the frowns of Fortune unless her smiles have already deceived him." The words come from his Consolation to Helvia, written during his exile in Corsica and addressed to his mother. In it, he distils the Stoic proposition that a grounded mind is moved by neither prosperity nor adversity. It is a fitting inscription for a bottle built to honour her name.
